BREAKFAST AT CHANEL & GUCCI

Oh you thought this would be a post about a freaking big shopping spree at Chanel & Gucci? Sorry, well I must say that this post title is probably a bit misleading here. 😉 Even though I would of course wish to show you my shopping bags full of Chanel and Gucci. I just came up with this topic as the cardigan that I’m wearing here immediately screamed “GUCCI!! at me, even though it’s from a retailer we all know. But this made me think: how well did the marketing of the brand Gucci developed in the last few years, that only the colour combo of light cream, red and dark blue together with pearl details made me think of the italian brand? Crazy how these details became the signature of Gucci right?

Same goes for Berets and the classic combo of black, white and the beret. Combining all these aspects, I couldn’t resist but think of the french chic of Chanel. It became like a classic uniform, which always makes us remind the roots of the french designer, correct? So only some days ago I had the discussion with my boyfriend. That even when you try not to be fashionable and stylish, this is already a statement itself. That even if you are not aware of the context and designer collections, that you’re probably wearing a piece which was inspired by one of the runway shows of the “big designers”. Do you remember the scene in “Devil wears Prada” where Andy gets explained, that even her old, bulky cardigan was a fashion statement some years ago when it has been adapted from cheap fashion retailers? (in fact Miranda says: “ThisÉ stuffÕ? Oh. OK. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you selectÉ I donÕt knowÉ that lumpy blue sweater, for instance because youÕre trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you donÕt know is that that sweater is (…) actually cerulean. And youÕre also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. (…) And then it, uh, filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and itÕs sort of comical how you think that youÕve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, youÕre wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room from a pile of stuff.)

So I guess we all get influenced – aware or unaware – in any kind of way and dress accordingly. And that Gucci and Chanel made us think with just a simple colour combination of tehir brands – that’s pretty fabulous marketing right? 😉

… Well, would Coco Chanel wear the look that I’m sporting today with Vans sneakers and jeans ? Probably not – but then again, it’s all about our own way to style and wear the pieces that designers, retailers or anyone presents to us right? And the break with the sneakers just felt right at that moment. And I think that’s what fashion is all about: to feel comfortable in your own skin and find your own way of expressing yourself. ?
